J-Serve Day of Service for High School Students

On Sunday, April 26, 2009, groups across the country ran service projects as part of J-Serve's Day of Service. Uri L'Tzedek led a project for New York-area high school students in the Washington Heights and Inwood neighborhoods of Manhattan. Through several different service modules, three critical urban issues were addressed:

  • Housing and Homelessness: Due to the housing crisis and soaring rent costs, thousands of individuals are on our city’s streets, without homes.
  • Senior Care: Due to dramatic increases in cost of living and health care and slashed public services, millions of the elderly are suffering.
  • Urban Environment: Due to lack of concern and oversight, entire neighborhoods are subjected to large quantities of smoke and lead, leading to high rates of asthma and lead poisoning, and “food deserts” lead to a lack of nutritional food choices.

Participants engaged in meaningful activities while providing real and quantifiable service to the community; and a meaningful dialogue took place between the teenagers, Uri L'Tzedek, and groups that do valuable work in New York City.

The day began at 10 AM in Washington Heights, with teens and staff getting to know each other and engaging in Jewish learning about service and Tikkun Olam. The students then split up for their projects.
