According to Jewish mysticism, the Hebrew month of Shevat (late January-early February of this year) corresponds to the senses of eating and tasting. In the spirit of these mystical teachings and the upcoming food-centered holiday of Tu B’Shevat (Jewish New Year for Trees), 92YTribeca Jewish life and PresenTense, an innovative grassroots Jewish organization, will host a fascinating discussion about Jewish food.
During the course of the night, we'll explore what makes a certain food or cuisine “Jewish.” We’ll start out the evening with a special cocktail, followed by a very brief food meditation featuring some of Tu B’Shevat’s unique foods. After getting our food and drink on, Russell Moss, 92YTribeca’s Head Chef, X, a local food activist, and Rabbi Ari Weiss from Uri L’Tzedek will share their opinions about what defines “Jewish food.” Whether your vote is for brisket, matzah, bagels, egg creams, or humus, the floor will be opened for all to have an informal, laid back discussion about the issues and ideas at hand. |
